  • What’s the weather like at the Luana Inn?
We may be biased, but we consider the weather in our area to be perfect. In Captain Cook, the temperature averages 77 – 81 degrees Fahrenheit year round, with an average rainfall of about three inches per month. Our location down near the water is warmer and drier than the up-country portion of South Kona. However, please note that although our location is known for lots of sun that it is tropical and still experiences some rainfall.

Elevation plays a major role in the weather patterns on the Big Island. In general, the higher the elevation, the cooler and damper the weather (while it may be cool and rainy at 1,500 ft. above sea level it could be sunny and dry at sea level). Also, the Kona-side of the island, or leeward-side, is the dry side of the island. The windward-side (where Hilo is located) is the “wet” side. (This holds true for all the islands.) Please pack accordingly if you plan to visit Hilo (the rainiest city in the nation with about 120 inches/year), Volcanoes National Park, or Mauna Kea (Mauna Kea does receive snow in the winter).
